What Does Whole-Person Wellness Really Mean?

Sometimes understanding your health begins by stepping back and looking at the bigger picture.

We tend to think about our health in pieces.

A headache is about the head. Back pain is about the back. Fatigue means we need more sleep. Digestive discomfort must be about something we ate.

But after decades of working with people and their health, I’ve learned that the body rarely works in such tidy little compartments.

Everything is connected.

How you sleep can affect how you feel during the day. Stress can change the way you breathe, move and digest. What you eat can influence your energy. Pain can affect your mood, and how you’re feeling emotionally can influence the way you experience your body.

That’s why I like to look at the whole person.

Look beyond the symptom

Symptoms matter. They’re one of the ways our bodies get our attention, and persistent or concerning symptoms should always be appropriately evaluated.

But I also like to ask:

  • What else is going on?
  • How are you sleeping?
  • How is your energy?
  • What has changed recently?
  • How are you eating and moving?
  • How much stress are you carrying?

Sometimes those questions reveal patterns we might otherwise miss.

It doesn’t mean everything is connected to everything else, or that every symptom has some hidden explanation.

It simply means we stay curious long enough to look at the bigger picture.

Pay attention to patterns

One of the simplest things you can do for your health is notice.

Notice when you feel your best. Notice when your energy changes. Notice what helps you sleep well. Notice how your body responds during stressful periods.

You don’t need to diagnose yourself. You’re simply gathering information about your own body — and that can lead to much better conversations with the professionals supporting your health.

Your health should support the life you want to live.

A thought to keep

Wellness should support your life

Whole-person wellness isn’t about doing everything perfectly.

It isn’t about following every health trend or spending your life trying to “optimize” yourself.

Your health should support the life you want to live.

So perhaps instead of always asking, “What am I doing wrong?” we can begin with a gentler question:

“What might my body need right now?”

That’s often a very good place to start.
