Nourishment Is More Than What’s on Your Plate

Taking care of yourself is about more than creating the perfect plate.

We hear so much about what we should eat.

More protein. Less sugar. More plants. Fewer processed foods.

And yes, what we eat matters.

But nourishment is about more than creating the perfect plate.

Your body receives the whole experience

Think about the difference between eating a beautiful, nourishing meal while feeling relaxed and eating that same meal while rushing out the door, answering emails or feeling completely overwhelmed.

The food may be identical.

The experience isn’t.

How we eat exists alongside sleep, stress, movement, hormones, digestion and the many other things happening in our lives.

That’s why I don’t believe wellness begins with trying to eat perfectly.

It begins with paying attention.

Make room for curiosity

Instead of immediately asking:

“What should I stop eating?”

Try asking:

  • How do I actually feel?
  • Do I have steady energy after meals?
  • Am I hungry again an hour later?
  • Do certain foods leave me feeling comfortable and satisfied?
  • Am I eating because I’m hungry — or because I’ve gone all day without stopping long enough to notice?

These aren’t questions designed to create more rules.

They’re simply ways of getting to know your body a little better.

Nourishment isn’t about eating perfectly. It’s about supporting the whole person.

A thought to keep

Nourishment should support your life

Food isn’t a test you pass or fail.

And wellness shouldn’t require you to spend your life worrying about whether you’re doing everything exactly right.

Choose nourishing foods when you can.

Enjoy your meals.

Notice how you feel.

And remember that taking care of yourself includes much more than what’s sitting on your plate.

Sometimes nourishment is a good meal.

Sometimes it’s rest.

Sometimes it’s movement, sunlight, laughter or sitting at the table long enough to actually enjoy what you’re eating.

It’s all part of the bigger picture.
